GPT-4o mini. The new OpenAI’s smaller, cheaper AI model (TechCrunch)

OpenAI has introduced GPT-40 Mini, a smaller, more affordable version of its latest flagship AI model, GPT-40. Designed for simple, high-volume tasks, this mini model aims to be faster and cheaper, making AI more accessible for smaller developers who might lack substantial funding. The new GPT-40 Mini, currently supporting text and images with future plans to include video and audio, is more than 60% cheaper than the previous smallest model, GPT-3.5 Turbo. It also outperforms other small models on the MMLU reasoning benchmark. Already available for developers and consumers through ChatGPT’s web and mobile apps, enterprise customers will gain access next week.

AI startups extend funding boom (CNBC).

In this video, Deirdre Bosa discusses the current trends in AI funding, highlighting significant investments in private AI companies despite some market softness. Key points include substantial fund-raising for Elon Musk’s xAI, which could be valued at $18 billion, and Mistral, a potential challenger to major AI models. While some AI companies have experienced layoffs and consolidation, there remains a strong influx of capital, especially for talent acquisition, with top AI researchers commanding high salaries. The distinction between companies building foundational models (requiring massive compute power and capital) and those developing applications on top of these models is emphasized. Mistral’s approach focuses on creating more efficient AI solutions with relatively lower capital requirements compared to giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.

10 People + AI = Billion Dollar Company? (Y Combinator)

The Y Combinator panel discusses the future of AI in programming, sparked by a controversial statement from Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, suggesting that in the future, everyone will be a programmer in human language as AI will handle most coding tasks. The panel explores the impact of large language models (LLMs) on programming, noting that while AI can handle some simpler tasks, it currently falls short in building complex systems. They highlight the progress made with tools like GitHub Copilot and the importance of benchmarks like SBench in driving AI advancements. The discussion also covers the potential for AI to reduce the number of employees in tech companies, the ongoing need for programming skills to develop critical thinking, and the continued relevance of learning to code for building foundational knowledge and good taste in engineering. The panel concludes that while AI will accelerate the creation of new startups and unicorns, understanding programming remains essential for innovation and effective leadership in technology.
